Advice for Advertising with Duke Community Housing

  1. Include pictures.
There is space for up to 3 photographs per ad. Community Housing staff posts the pictures. Email pictures (jpeg format preferred) to communityhousing@duke.edu.

  2. Compose useful comments.
This is the area where you can really market your rental and make it stand out from others in the database. Include specific information. For example, the phrase "Within a 5 minute drive to Duke" is more informative than "Convenient to Duke." Avoid using abbreviations (everyone does not understand them) and all upper case letters.

  3. Timing is important.
Many graduate-level students who are new to Duke use this resource to search for rental housing. Most of them need to move into their new home between June and August. If you want to increase the odds of getting a graduate-level student as a tenant, have your rental available some time between June and August.

  4. You are responsible for keeping your ad active.
The Community Housing web site is configured to make your ad inactive 30 days after the availability date you type into the system. Unfortunately the web site does not notify you when the ad becomes inactive. Periodically check your ad. People can't find it in the database if it is not active.
